Twin districts observe birth anniversary of Basavanna

Mangalore, April 25, 2012 : N. Yogish Bhat, the deputy speaker of the state legislative assembly, inaugurated the Basaveshwara Shathamanothsava Jayanthi celebrations jointly held by the DK district administration, the Karavali Veerashaiva Kshemabhivruddhi Sangha, and the Kannada and Culture Department on April 24 Tuesday in Town Hall. In his inaugural address, he said that Basavanna provided the key to a simple, yet rich life.

Addressing the gathering, Dayananda, the additional deputy commissioner of DK, said that the teachings of Basavanna hold true even today, owing to which they have been translated into several languages such as French, English, and others.

Mangalore Basavanagudi Girisiddheshwara Shivacharya Swami; Dr. S. B. Yalaburgi, the president of the Karavali Veerashaiva Kshemabhivruddhi Sangha; Shivaram, the secretary of the Zilla Panchayat; and Dr. Harish Kumar, the commissioner of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) were also present.

The birth anniversary of Basavanna was also observed in Udupi, during which Katpadi Shankar Poojary, the president of the ZP, said that the teachings of Basavanna are relevant even today. It was organized by the Udupi district administration, the Kannada and Culture Department, the ZP, and the Udupi branch of the Mahajagadguru Basavanna Dharmartha in the hall of the Board High School.

Speaking about Basavanna, Hayavadana Upadhyaya, the lecturer of Vijaya College in Mulky, said that Basavanna was opposed to the caste system and to idol worship. Though he was against the construction of mutts, people are now building mutts in his name and the state government is sanctioning funds for it, he said.

Devadas Hebbar, the president of the Taluk Panchayat; Kumar, the additional DC; S. A. Prabhakar Sharma, the CEO of the Zilla Panchayath; and many others were also present.
