Mangaluru, Feb 15, 2026: Traffic movement between Kankanady and Pumpwell will be diverted for four months from Sunday to facilitate a road upgradation project by the Public Works Department (PWD) between Pumpwell Junction and Karavali Junction.

According to police, the traffic diversion will remain in force till June 15, 2026. During this period, there will be one-way movement of vehicles from Karavali Junction towards Pumpwell. Traffic from Pumpwell to Karavali Junction will be prohibited and diverted via the Old Kankanady Road adjoining the Father Muller Hospital compound to reach Kankanady Junction.

In an order issued on February 14, Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said outbound city buses would continue to ply on the Karavali Junction–Pumpwell stretch, while inbound city buses heading towards the State Bank of India area would be diverted through Old Kankanady Road.

To ease congestion, parking has been banned on both sides of Old Kankanady–Pumpwell Junction Road, Karavali Junction–Kankanady Junction Road, Kankanady Junction–Falnir Highland Hospital Road, and Karavali Junction–Balmatta Road.

Vehicles entering the city from Thokkottu and Ullal have been advised to use the alternate route via Mahakalipadpu Railway Underpass. Heavy vehicles, including Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses and Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses bound for the KSRTC bus stand at Bejai, must proceed straight from Pumpwell Junction to Nanthoor Junction.

KSRTC buses coming from B.C. Road towards the city will have to travel to Nanthoor Junction via Padil Junction on the national highway and then proceed to the Bejai bus stand through Shivabagh, Balmatta, Ambedkar Circle and Bunts Hostel.

Appealing for public cooperation, the Police Commissioner urged motorists to bear with temporary inconvenience and strictly follow traffic directions.

Meanwhile, the PWD will upgrade the existing asphalt road between Karavali Junction and Pumpwell into a concrete road at an estimated cost of ₹4 crore. The project, sanctioned in 2020, involves laying a 7-metre-wide concrete road on both sides with a 1-metre-wide median. Pavement construction and concrete shoulder drains are not part of the project scope.

PWD officials said the 1-metre-diameter main water supply line from Thumbe passing beneath the road will not be shifted due to high costs. The work will begin with the up-lane from Pumpwell to Karavali Junction. Prior to this, the Mangaluru City Corporation will shift the existing underground drainage line and other utility services, besides laying service lines for the Jalasiri water supply scheme. Streetlight poles may also need relocation due to changes in road alignment after concreting.
