Mangaluru, December 25, 2025: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader on Wednesday said it is the responsibility of the government and officials to create an environment in which people can live peacefully and happily.
Responding to questions from reporters on the police ban on traditional cockfighting in Dakshina Kannada district, Khader said the government should discuss the matter and take an appropriate decision. As the Speaker, he said, he could not comment further, adding that even if one has personal views, it is not appropriate to express them while holding a constitutional post.
Replying to a question on objections raised over remarks related to ‘Harikatha’ during the Assembly session, he said the coastal region enjoys a special respect and that legislators from the area have long been known for their courtesy and simplicity. He said this reputation should be preserved.
On the delay in opening the Mahakalipadu railway underpass, which provides direct connectivity from Ullal to Mangaluru city despite completion of construction, Khader said he would discuss the issue with the concerned officials and the district in-charge minister.
He also said discussions have been held on establishing units of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Mangaluru. Similar centres have already been set up in Kalaburagi and Mysuru. With patients from four to five districts travelling to Mangaluru for treatment, the proposed units would benefit patients and help maintain balance in treatment costs for heart and cancer care, he said.
Khader further said that during the current Assembly session, 23 Bills, including the Appropriation Bill and the Karnataka Land Revenue (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025, were passed.
