Beltangady, May 31, 2026: Thousands of fish were found dead in the Bargula vented dam area near the famous Shishileshwara Temple at Shishila, triggering concern among devotees and environmentalists.
The dead fish were seen floating in the water and washed ashore in the protected Matsyatirtha zone. Locals suspect that toxic chemicals were deliberately released into the waterbody on Friday night, leading to the mass fish kill. The discovery of a packet of copper sulphate near the spot has further strengthened suspicions of poisoning.

The area, extending about two kilometres around the temple’s sacred fish habitat, is a designated conservation zone where fishing is strictly prohibited. The fish are considered sacred and enjoy special protection due to the religious significance of the site.
Residents and devotees have demanded an immediate inspection by the authorities, scientific testing of water samples, and stringent action against those responsible for the incident.
