Tension at Uppinangady Govt College as student groups clash; 5 detained

Uppinangady, July 26, 2013 : As many as five students of Uppinangady Government First Grade College were taken into custody while complaints were filed against 18 students following a clash that ensued between two student groups of different communities  at the college on July 25, Thursday.

According to sources, a girl from the college had complained to her brother against one Ranjith who had reportedly pulled her hair about three days ago. It is learnt, the girl’s brother had come to the college on Thursday and questioned Ranjith resulting in a clash between two student groups.


The Uppinangady police rushed to the spot after the Principal informed them about the worsening situation in the college.


The police detained five students in ccnnection with the clashes.  But, this incident led to angry protest outside the local police station by the students. Police had to finally resort to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd.


Dakshina Kannada SP Abhishek Goel and Assistant Commissioner H Prasanna visited the Uppinangady police station after the incident. The SP said the matter will be investigated and stern action will follow against those responsible for the clashes.


The Uppinangady Circle Inspector also held talks with leaders of the two communities following the clash.


The college management has declared a holiday for the college for two days following the incident.
