Mangaluru, Feb 4, 2024: Team Mangalore Trust, a collective of kite enthusiasts in the city, is set to host the ONGC-MRPL International Kite Festival at Mangaluru’s Tannirbhavi beach on February 10 and 11.
Founder Sarvesh Rao talking to reporters in Mangaluru on Sunday said that the event will feature 13 international kite flyers from countries such as Thailand, Ukraine, Greece, Estonia, Sweden, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Additionally, more than 35 Indian kite fliers from Dahanu in Maharashtra, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Rajkot, Surat, and Kerala will participate.
Rao emphasized that the ideal conditions of good breeze during January and February make it a perfect time to organize kite festivals along the Karnataka coastline, especially since many annual festivals have already concluded. The Team Mangalore Trust will showcase their kites, including Kathakali, Yaksha, Gajendra, Bhoota Kola, Garuda, Pushpaka Vimana, and Vibhishana.
Another Trust member, Giridhar Kamath, mentioned that this marks the sixth year of organizing the kite festival. Kite flying will commence at 2:30 p.m. on February 10, with a formal inaugural function at 5:30 p.m. Night flying of kites will take place between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on both days.
To accommodate attendees, arrangements have been made for parking with space for 2,000 cars and 6,000 two-wheelers near Tannirbhavi beach. Additional parking facilities are available at Mata Amritanandamayi school grounds in Boloor. A ferry service is also provided for transportation from Sultan Batthery to Tannirbhavi beach.
The kite festival’s logo was unveiled earlier by U.T. Khader, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker, who praised Team Mangalore Trust for sustaining interest in kite flying among Mangaloreans. Officials from Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited, including Group General Manager (Human Resource) Krishna Hegde, were present at the launch.
