His family which had earlier lodged a complaint of missing, also suspected that he might have been killed  by the family of his lover as  Imtiyaz had gone missing just two days ahead of the marriage of his lover with a boy chosen by her family.

Meanwhile, suspicion grew with reports on June 7 stating of the finding of body on the banks of Netravathi. Though the aggrieved family had contacted the Vittal station, they were told that the unclaimed body had been cremated.

However, the photograph was shown and the family concluded that it was that of Imtiyaz.

A protest was also  staged in front of the station and the family even approached the district minister Ramanatha Rai complaining that the body had been buried even before it could be claimed. The IGP was informed by the minister and the SP subsequently had suspended the  Vittal sub-inspector Madhava Koodlu for negligence of duty and thoroughly probing the case.

Now that Imtiyaz is back the family has requested that the suspended SI be reinstated. It is learnt, an agonized Imtiyaz had  left for Hyderabad without informing anyone and had returned after he could not find a job there.
