Surathkal, Oct 23, 2025: A recent spate of burglaries has left residents of Surathkal anxious, with CCTV footage capturing masked men roaming neighborhoods armed with machetes, knives, and iron rods. The surge in incidents has caused growing fear, with many residents now hesitant to leave their homes unattended at night, even for short durations.
Despite police awareness campaigns encouraging citizens to install CCTV cameras for safety, footage continues to capture more crimes than it prevents. The visuals show organized gangs breaking into houses and shops with dangerous weapons, spreading panic among locals.
Unsolved Incidents Persist
On October 10, a burglary was reported at a shop in Suma Towers near Surathkal Junction, where the thief fled with ₹3.5 lakh in cash. Investigations later tracked the suspect’s movements toward Udupi. Earlier, on September 5, multiple theft attempts were reported in Muchur, though the culprits failed to steal any valuable items.
Residents Gripped by Fear
The sight of armed burglars in CCTV footage has deeply unsettled residents, who fear confronting them could lead to violence. Locals worry that the increasing boldness of these gangs could result in serious confrontations.
Appeal for Stronger Patrolling
Citizens have urged police to intensify night patrols, particularly in isolated areas and neighborhoods with unoccupied houses. They also demanded closer surveillance of migrant workers taking up temporary jobs, suspecting possible links to the recent crimes.
Shortage of Police Personnel
Mangaluru City North MLA Dr. Bharath Shetty said a lack of manpower is hindering efforts to curb thefts. He emphasized the need for more staff, dedicated night-patrol units, and improved vehicles and facilities to strengthen law enforcement.
Police Assure Swift Action
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Ravishankar K. said that investigations are progressing swiftly, with several leads already in hand. He assured that arrests will be made soon and that efforts are underway to restore public confidence.
