The convict  Karunakar Pataly was earlier charged of beating his wife Arunashree to death using a wooden club. Interestingly in this case, the Public Prosecutor managed to provide circumstantial evidence and ensure punishment to guilty even after the only witness,  a neighbouring woman named Jayanthi had turned hostile.

Arunashree who hailed from Sonangeri was first married to Arun Kumar and the couple had a daughter. But when Arun Kumar  realized that his wife was having an illicit affair with Karunaker Pataly, he  deserted her while  the daughter remained with him.

Following this, Arunashree began to live with Karunaker at Ubaradka and they too had one daughter though they were not formally married. The families of Karunaker and Arunashree then decided to get them married and eve transferred 10 cents land in her name. But Karunaker evaded marriage and began to suspect Arunashree’s fidelity. On February 21, 2011 he killed Arunashree  who was pregnant, by beating her with a wooden  club. A neighbouring woman Jayanthi had informed Arunashree’s brother who lodged a complaint. Police had later arrested Karunaker.
