Student dies in hospital, days after suicide attempt over social media threat

Belthangady, Jan 30, 2023: A college student from Belthangady who had  attempted suicide after he received a call threatening to make his private video viral on Instagram,  has succumbed without responding to treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru on January 30, Monday.

 

 

The deceased is Harshith, a resident of Dharmasthala and a second year B.Com student of a private college in Belthangady. It is learnt, he had come into contact with a stranger on Instagram and had participated in a video call with the former. It is learnt the stranger then claimed that he had a private video of the student and that he would make it public if his demand for cash was not fulfilled.

Unable to  heed to the demand and out of fear,  Harshith had attempted suicide by consuming poison at home on January 24. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Ujire and from there to a hospital in Mangaluru but of no avail.
