Stone quarry blast – police arrest two men

Udupi, June 21, 2012 : The police, on June 20, Wednesday, arrested two people in connection with the blast that killed two women workers at a stone quarry in Sooda – Nandalike.

The arrested are Anish, the manager of Joy Stone Crushers, the company that operates the stone quarry, and Shivanna, who was in charge of the quarry.

On June 19, Tuesday, the two women were working near a shed, in which a number of explosives were stored, when lightening struck the shed, resulting in the blast.

The deceased are Mallavva and Ambika. Their bodies have already been handed over to their families.

Furious local people and members of the district unit of the JD (S) have demanded that the quarry’s license to operate must be cancelled.

The owner of Joy Stone Crushers is Joy, and the company is registered in his son Kiran’s name.
