Mangalore, January 27: St. Agnes College organized an exhibition based on the theme of bio-diversity on Jan 27, Thursday as part of its annual day celebration.
Dr. N. A. Madhyastha formally inaugurated the exhibition, a 3-day event, which will be open to the general public on Thursday from 12:00 noon to 4:30 p.m. and on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. In his inaugural address, he spoke of the necessity to preserve bio-diversity, which is soon about to get extinct. He also expressed his concern over the threat faced by the bio-diversity of the Western Ghats because of the use of pesticides, privatization of water bodies, and development of coffee plantations. Stating that the United Nations has declared 2010 as the Year of Bio-diversity, he said that each species has its own role to play while on earth.
Dr. Ita D’Souza, the chemistry professor, spoke about the exhibition and said that it highlights the role of bio-diversity in the maintenance of life and well being on earth. She said that the students and the faculty of 25 departments have worked at several projects related to the theme of bio-diversity in 2010 and that the research-related activities of students as well as teachers are on display at the exhibition.
