Mangalore, Oct 6, 2012: B. Janardhana Poojary, former union minister, said that the DK and Udupi District Congress will organize a massive convention at Nehru Maidan. Sonia Gandhi, president of the Indian National Congress will take part in the valedictory ceremony, scheduled to be held on October 18, Thursday, he added.
Announcing the above at a press meet held in the District Congress office today, he said tha MPs, MLAs, and MLCs of Udupi and DK District Congress, members of the Zilla Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat, and Gram Panchayat, members of the Block Congress, and members of various wings of the Congress Party will take part in the convention.
Further, he said that over 15,000 party leaders and workers will take part in the convention, with AICC General Secretary Oscar Fernandes presiding. Even Congress members from the state and central ministries will take part, he added.
Stating that the objective of the convention is to strengthen the party and make preparations for the upcoming elections, he said that the elections could be held in December or January.
Otherwise, they could be held in the months of March and April. The convention has been organized to motivate workers to work in the best interests of the party, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Ramanath Rai announced that Sonia Gandhi will visit Kudroli and Shri Gokarnatheshwara at 6:00 p.m., after the valedictory ceremony, to inaugurate the temple’s centenary celebrations and Dasara Mahotsava. She will inaugurate the event after offering puja, he added.
Mrs. Gandhi will also unveil the temple’s centenary stone and will inaugurate the stage event by lighting the traditional lamp and delivering the inaugural address. MP Oscar Fernandes will also take part in the 4-day event, he added.
Among those present were MLA U. T. Khader, MLA Abhayachandra Jain, former MLA Vijay Kumar Shetty, KPCC Secretary Ivan D’Souza, Kripa Alva, and others.
