Mangalore, Mar 11, 2012: The Jaya Vijaya Jodukere Kambala Committee held the second edition of the Jodukere Kambala in honor of the late Jayagangadhara Shetty on the banks of River Nethravathi on March 10 Saturday in Jeppinamogaru.
The participating buffaloes were given a bath and beautifully decorated. Before the race, their teeth were checked to determine their age. Younger buffaloes have six teeth while the older buffaloes have 8 teeth. Accordingly, the buffaloes had to participate in the junior of senior categories.
Brahma Shri Vedamurthy Vittaldas Tantri of Derebail blessed the slush field, after which he declared the race open by lighting the lamp. Delivering the inaugural address, he said that Jayagangadhar in honor of who this race is being held was a popular social worker who encouraged Kambalas. He had organized a number of cultural events when he was alive, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Harish Kumar, the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) commissioner, said that rural sports were on the verge of becoming extinct, but owing to the enthusiasm of some people, they were brought to life again and today they enjoy a great deal of popularity.
Ramanath Hegde, the head of the Mangaladevi Temple Management Committe; Ganesh Shetty, the proprietor of Foodlands; Neelakanta Manjunath Bhandary Moodushedde, the head of the managing committee of Umamaheshwari Temple; Shankar Palemar of Vaishanavi Temple; and many others were also present.
The prizes were distributed at 6:00 p.m. today. MLA J. Krishna Palemar was the guest of honor. Pegasus MD Anil Shetty Munnuthota presided.
