Mangaluru, August 1, 2024: Due to ongoing heavy rainfall, schools and pre-university colleges in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will remain closed for another day on Friday, August 2.
The Deputy Commissioners of both districts had already declared a holiday for these institutions on August 1. The disaster management authority has implemented precautions in response to the persistent heavy rain over the past few days.
Heavy rain is expected in the Dakshina Kannada district on Friday, and the weather department has issued a red alert. It has forecasted rain with thunderstorms at a speed of 30-40 km per hour. From Wednesday morning to Thursday morning, Shiradi received the highest rainfall of 269 mm, followed by Marodi with 264 mm, Balanja with 250 mm, Melanthabettu with 205 mm, Beluvai with 202 mm, and Laila with 195.5 mm.
More than 30 houses in Kudru (Mugeer) and Daivangala Gudde areas of Adyapadi village, within the jurisdiction of Kandavara Gram Panchayat in Bajpe, have been inundated by floods. People have been evacuated to relief centers with the assistance of the NDRF team and local residents. MLA Bharath Shetty Y visited the flood-affected Kandavara Gram Panchayat area to inspect the situation. During this visit, the villagers submitted a petition to the MLA, saying, "We have lost our homes and belongings. The compensation of 5-10 thousand rupees you are providing is not enough. Before anything else, the villagers urged the MLA to construct the Maravoor dam scientifically."
In Bantwal, due to a sudden rise in water levels in the Phalguni River near Kadapu Kari in Ammunje village, Polali, around 8 houses have been flooded. All families have been rescued with the help of the Bantwal taluk administration and fire department personnel. It is reported that after the water level rose in the Phalguni River, water entered these 8 houses in the form of artificial flooding. The rescue was carried out using boats from the fire department, and officials have stated that the presence of debris in the river slightly hindered the rescue operations.
