Mangaluru, Feb 27, 2022: With the completion of the state-level preparatory examination on Saturday, the department of public instruction will focus on revisions and help students prepare and perform well in the upcoming SSLC board examinations scheduled from March 28. The department has come up with a roadmap to help slow learners.
Dakshina Kannada DDPI K Sudhakar said several initiatives have been planned and some have already been implemented to help students perform better. Currently, classes are held through a radio programme conducted by Akashavani Mangaluru. From next week, there will be a one-hour phone-in programme conducted by subject experts.
SSLC students can call and clarify doubts pertaining to each subject. The district administration has also asked the department to give two practice worksheets to every student in government and aided schools.
Besides, based on the academic performance, students have been segregated into batches - A,B,C and those who are unable to score passing marks. “Each category is given sufficient teaching guidance so that they do better in upcoming examinations. The current academic performance of students is not up to our expectations,” Sudhakar said.
Several programmes have been launched at the BEO level. For example, Mangaluru South BEO will hold special classes for those students who have scored below passing marks. Dr Prashanth Kumar, BEO, South said that those average and below-average students will be given personal attention. “The overall district level SSLC preparatory result is just 53% whereas it used to cross 65% during pre-pandemic days,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mangalore University which has adopted 10 government schools has planned a programme to help SSLC students.
Stating that such initiatives will help boost confidence among children, Sadananda AD Poonja, BEO, North said, “Students have already appeared for district and state-level preparatory examinations. A focussed one-month training before the exam will further help to perform better.”
During a recent meeting, seputy commissioner KV Rajendra instructed DPI officials to rope in retired teachers to conduct classes in nearby community halls for SSLC students. Prepare a detailed list of those candidates whose performance has remained poor and along with absentees, he said.
Meanwhile, SSLC Board has granted permission to start an evaluation centre in Puttur.
