Mangalore, Aug 2, 2013: The cops have been oft and again warning the public against falling prey to fake SMSes declaring them as winners in some bogus contests. Still gullible and sometimes even intelligent people have been falling prey to the trap laid by some tricksters.
In a latest instance, a woman from Mulky lost nearly Rs 3 lakhs lured by an SMS announcing that she was a winner of a cash reward of Rs 5 crores.
Silvia Fernandes (28) of Moorukaveri in Mulki who was overjoyed on seeing the SMS sent her details to the given number and she received a call from a man identifying himself with UK Toyota stating that she needed to make a small payment to receive the huge cash prize.
A totally ignorant Silvia deposited Rs 3,07,333 as told by the man in accounts of Syndicate Bank, Karnataka Bank, Bank of Baroda and SBI branches at Kinnigoli.
But since then, her efforts to contact the number from which she got the call went in vain. Having no word from the company, Siliva realized she was cheated and registered a police complaint and a case has been registered under Cyber Crime Act against the UK Toyota.
