
Udupi, Aug. 15, 2026: Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Rizwan Arshad has been appointed as the district in-charge minister for Udupi. Arshad, who represents the Shivajinagar Assembly constituency in Bengaluru, is serving his first term in the Karnataka Cabinet.
A 46-year-old B.Com graduate, Arshad entered electoral politics by winning the Shivajinagar by-election in 2019. He began his political career through the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) during 1995-96 and later served as a Senate member of Mysore University. Between 2004 and 2010, he held key positions in the Youth Congress, serving as the state vice-president and subsequently as the national secretary. In 2011, he became the first elected president of the Karnataka Youth Congress.
As part of the nation’s 80th Independence Day celebrations, Arshad will hoist the national flag and deliver the Independence Day address at the Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium in Ajjarkad, Udupi. He arrived in the district on Friday night ahead of the official programmes.
His schedule for Saturday includes:
7.30 a.m. – Flag hoisting programme organised by the District Congress Seva Dal near the City Service Bus Stand.
8.00 a.m. – Flag hoisting at the District Congress Office in Nairkere.
8.30 a.m. – Paying homage at the Martyrs’ Memorial near Ajjarkad Stadium.
8.35 a.m. – Foundation stone laying ceremony for a basketball court near Ajjarkad Stadium.
8.45 a.m. – Inauguration of the roofing work at Ajjarkad Stadium.
9.00 a.m. – Participation in the main Independence Day celebration and flag hoisting programme at Ajjarkad Stadium.
12.00 noon – Participation in a Youth Congress programme at the LIC Leeco Bank Auditorium.
12.15 p.m. – Inauguration of the Illu Foods masala powder unit of the Udupi Mahila Kisan Producer Company at the Shivalli Horticulture Farm in Doddanagudde, organised by the Zilla Panchayat.
12.30 p.m. – Inauguration of ‘Akka Cafe’ near Nairkere Road in Brahmagiri, organised by the Zilla Panchayat, following which he will proceed to Mangaluru.
