Retired Librarian Found Dead in Netravathi River in Bantwal

Puttur, July 26, 2026: A 60-year-old retired librarian, who had been missing for the past two days, was found dead on Saturday after her body was recovered from the Shambhoor dam across the Netravathi River in Bantwal taluk. Police suspect that she died by suicide after allegedly jumping into the river.

The deceased has been identified as Vijaya T (60), wife of Rama Bhat and a resident of Kalathmika Mane in Ajeyanagar, Padur village of Puttur taluk. She had retired as the librarian of Vivekananda Degree College, Puttur.

According to her family, Vijaya left her residence on Thursday morning after informing them that she was going to Puttur town. When she did not return home, relatives searched for her before lodging a missing person complaint at the Puttur Women’s Police Station.

Her body was recovered on Saturday after it was found lodged in the Shambhoor dam on the Netravathi River in neighbouring Bantwal taluk.

Police said preliminary investigations indicate that Vijaya had allegedly jumped into the river. The exact circumstances leading to her death are yet to be ascertained, and further investigation is underway.
