Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Mar 5, 2012: The people of the Mangalore City Corporation’s (MCC) 17th and 23rd wards organized a protest in the premises of the MCC on March 5 Monday demanding the immediate repair of drains and the Kottara Chowki to Konchadi road. They also organized a raasta roko in Malemar as part of their protest.

Alleging that Shankar Bhat, the corporator and former mayor, had completely ignored the problem, they said that they have repeatedly requested the repair of the road, but nothing has been done as yet. Mr. Bhat had promised that the road would be repaired last time the residents had complained.

According to the residents, the open drains have been creating all sorts of health problems among the people for the past 3 years and have become a place for mosquitoes to breed. Shyamala Vikram, a resident, said that if the corporator cannot get the road and the drain repaired, he ought to resign. Stating that fines are slapped on those who delay tax payments to the MCC, she wanted to know who will levy fines on representatives who fail to do their duty.

The protestors shouted slogans against MCC officials and the corporator.

Kumar Malemar, the president of the Jana Hitarakshana Samithi; Shymala Vikram, its vice president; Shrinivas Rao, its secretary; and many others were also present.
