Registration for Swalamban held for unorganized workers

Mangalore, Oct 8: The registration for Swalamban, a state as well as union government scheme, which includes provision of health insurance to unorganized workers such as domestic staff, auto rickshaw drivers, and beedie workers, was held on Oct 4 Tuesday at Don Bosco Hall. 

Venkatesh Sindhihatti, the state assistant labour commissioner, inaugurated the event. In his inaugural address, he urged the workers to grab as many government benefits available to them as they can.

Under the Swalamban scheme, a hospitalized member can claim financial aid of up to Rs. 30,000. Five members of a family can be enrolled and travelling expenses of Rs. 100 will also be provided in case hospitalization is required.

Unorganized workers wishing to enroll in the programme must pay a registration fee of Rs. 30, said Mr. Sindhihatti, adding that the government has earmarked Rs. 350 crore for this scheme.

RTO C. Mallikarjun was the chief guest of the occasion. In his address, he said that the beneficiaries of this scheme will receive compensation of Rs. 50,000 in case of accidental death or death caused by diseases. 

Ivan D’Souza, the president of the city auto rickshaw owners and drivers’ association, said in his presidential address that RTO and labour officials should create awareness among unorganized workers regarding state benefits due to them. 

Shekhar Deralakatte, the chief secretary of the association; Rajesh Veera Nagar; Wilfred D’Suza; and Sitaram Shetty were also present.
