Mangaluru, Aug 13, 2022: There is a need to bring about reforms in the criminal justice system to set right the loopholes in the bail sanctioning procedures, said Supreme Court Judge Justice Abdul Nazeer.
He was speaking on the topic "Need for reforms in Criminal Justice System" on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the SDM Law College Old Students Association, at the College auditorium on August 13, Saturday.
In many instances it takes several months and even a year for accused to get bail and this is a tiresome process. Even the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in many cases regarding the loopholes in the bail sanctioning procedure, are not adhered to. As per a survey by the National Law University, 14% of those who secure bail remain behind bars unable to meet the bail conditions, he said.
Presently 90% of the accused in criminal cases get acquitted. However it takes 10 to 15 years for a case to be settled. Therefore many spend years as under trials. Even after release they have to frequent courts, the procedures themselves should not be a punishment, he said.
Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala, Rajya Sabha Member and Chairman of Ujire SDM Society presided over the function.
SDM Education Society Secretary Harshendra Kumar was present as a chief guest. Achievers, rank holders, those who secured Ph.D were felicitated.
SDM Law College Principal Dr Taranath, Old Students Association President M R Ballal and others were present.
