Rain likely in coastal districts till Feb 27, says weather department

Bengaluru, Feb 23, 2026: The state’s coastal districts are expected to receive rainfall until February 27, according to the weather department. The rain is attributed to a depression that has formed over the Bay of Bengal.

The depression, currently centred near north Sri Lanka over the Bay of Bengal, is showing signs of moving eastward. As a result, the winds blowing from the Bay of Bengal are likely to weaken, and the overall rainfall pattern will need close monitoring. Officials have also indicated that rainfall may turn out to be lower than initially predicted.

Rain

Good rainfall has already been recorded in the rural parts of Dakshina Kannada district. Rain is also likely in Kasaragod, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in the coming days.

The department has cautioned that adverse weather conditions could disrupt normal life. Strong winds may result in power outages in some areas, while rainfall could lead to traffic congestion. There is also a risk of tree branches breaking and falling, and the public has been advised to remain alert. Rain is expected in selected parts of the districts, along with the possibility of thunder and lightning.

Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation has developed in the upper atmosphere over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Due to this system, a low-pressure area has formed, drawing moisture-laden clouds from the sea towards Karnataka and Kerala.

Heavy rainfall has been reported in several parts of Dakshina Kannada district, and rain activity is likely to continue over the next five days.
