Bantwal, Dec 21, 2025: Vittal police on Saturday afternoon raided a paddy field in Kepu village of Bantwal taluk following credible information about illegal cockfighting being organised on the property of Muralidhar Rai.
During the raid, police found several individuals gathered at the spot with roosters prepared for cockfighting. Officers cautioned those present about the legal consequences of engaging in the prohibited activity. However, the MLA of the Puttur Assembly constituency, who was present at the location, allegedly instigated and encouraged the continuation of the cockfighting, following which the activity reportedly resumed.

The Vittal police inspector subsequently arranged adequate security and detained 16 persons from the spot. Police also seized 22 roosters and sharp blades used in cockfighting.
A case has been registered at the Vittal police station against landowner Muralidhar Rai for allegedly allowing illegal activity on his property without permission. The MLA has also been booked for alleged instigation and abetment, along with the 16 persons involved.
The case has been registered under Crime No. 190/2025, invoking Sections 189(2), 49, 221, 223 and 190(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Sections 3 and 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
