Nirmal Kumar of Karnataka Rajya Dalitha Sangha Samithi urged Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh to take punitive measures against Abhaya Kumar, a Kannada professor in Mangalore University, who stands accused of sexually harassing a research scholar belonging to the Dalit community.

Nirmal said that the research scholar is from Govinda Pai Memorial College in Manjeshwara and had started her PhD research with Abhaya Kumar as guide in 1999. The professor would sexually harass her and call her several times. She complained to the university, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, the deputy commissioner of Kasargod, and assistant commissioner of Manjeshwar. Although the case was handed over to the government of Karnataka in 2000, no action has been taken, he said.
