Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Nov 27, 2025: The restoration of the Kalasha structure at Pumpwell, which was removed a decade ago during the construction of the Pumpwell flyover, is now in its final phase. The Kalasha crown is expected to be fully restored by the New Year.

The Kalasha was dismantled in 2016 for the flyover project. The first phase of reinstallation has been completed, and the remaining work involves decorative lighting, planting flower shrubs, and beautifying the surrounding area. Once finished, the spot will be named Mahaveer Vritt and will feature a granite nameplate.

The restoration work began on October 25 this year. Around 4:30 a.m., with the support of local organisations and residents, the Kalasha kept near Pumpwell Outpost was lifted using cranes and trailers. It was then transported to the Pumpwell–Garodi road stretch, where Smart City had already prepared a platform. The Jain Society is currently carrying out the installation work.

In 2001–02, the Union government had decided to celebrate the 2600th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Mahaveer Swami nationwide. Following this, the Mangaluru City Corporation named the circle Mahaveer Vritt. The Jain Society and the Jain community later developed the 43-cent area and installed a 20-tonne Kalasha at a cost of about ₹12 lakh.

The Kalasha remained unused for nine years, and the Jain Society had repeatedly urged the city corporation to reinstall it. A few months ago, the corporation granted permission for its relocation, and the ongoing work is being carried out according to civic guidelines.

Jain Society president Pushparaj Jain said the Kalasha is being restored exactly as before and that the final phase of the work is underway. He added that the entire project is expected to be completed by January.
