Mangaluru, Aug 3, 2025: Members of the Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane staged a protest near the Clock Tower in Mangaluru on Saturday, condemning the Chhattisgarh government’s arrest and imprisonment of two Christian nuns on what they alleged were false charges. The protesters demanded their immediate release and the withdrawal of the fabricated cases.
Addressing the gathering, Anita Frank, a women’s leader from the Mangaluru Diocese, said that despite constitutional guarantees of equal rights, minorities are being targeted across the country. “The Centre and BJP-led state governments are enabling these attacks, pushing Christian and Muslim communities into a state of fear,” she alleged.
Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane district leader Ishwari Beltangady criticized the Modi-led government, saying it failed to protect women while making symbolic gestures like honoring daughters. “The Chhattisgarh BJP government’s arrest of Christian nuns on baseless charges, while leaders in Kerala express fake sympathy, exposes their hypocrisy,” she said.
Leaders Kiran Prabha, Jayanti Shetty and Manjula Nayak, president of Samarasya Mangaluru, described the attacks on the Christian community under the guise of anti-conversion drives as a threat to democracy.
Several activists and members of the Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane participated in the protest.
