Mangalore, October 27: A huge group of 200 people have participated in a Padayatra from Nanthoor to Thokkottu , protesting against the pathetic condition of NH17 on Wednesday, October 27.
In the protest, protesters said that government representatives hardly care about the fact that the road has made their life miserable. The tarred surface of the road has disappeared completely and dust storms arise whenever vehicles pass over the road, owing to which a number of residents have developed chest-related disorders. Owners of private vehicles complained that the badly maintained road was wrecking their vehicles.
The residents of the areas have openly declared their support of stopping bus service along the highway from dawn to dusk on Wednesday.
Since NH 17 is the busiest highway in the state, it is impossible to use it when it is in such a state of disrepair, they said. The authorities have so far chosen to ignore all pleas and complaints; and the strike is to demand the immediate repair of this NH 17 stretch.
Due to the strike, residents of this area could not move towards Mangalore side. In the morning, all office goers and school children’s have come out from their house but went back as there were no city buses plying on this route. But the Karnataka state road transport buses and Malabar buses (Kerala state road transport) are plying on this route as usual. All city buses are off roads on Wednesday Oct 27 seeking immediate repair of NH 17 from Mulki to Tokkottu. Only important vehicles such as milk vans, school buses, and ambulances were allowed to ply along the roads in the morning.
