Mangaluru, Mar 02, 2021: Premananda Shetty of the BJP has been elected as the new Mayor of Mangaluru for the second year of the BJP term in the Mangaluru City Corporation. Sumangala Rao has been elected as the Deputy Mayor in the elections held on Tuesday.
The posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor were earmarked for General category candidates this time. Premananda Shetty secured 46 votes while Congress candidate Anil Kumar got 14 votes. In the election to Deputy Mayor post Sumangala Rao secured 46 votes while Congress candidate Jacintha Alfred got 14 votes.
There were a total of 64 votes including votes of 60 corporators and two MLAs. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and MLC B M Farooq had abstained. MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Bharath Shetty were present. Two SDPI members preferred to remain neutral.
Prakash was the polling officer. Additional Deputy Commissioner M J Roopa, MCC Deputy Commissioner Santosh were present.
