Mangalore, May 22: A condolence meeting with prayer services was held at the site of the tragic plane crash of May 22, 2010 on the morning of May 22, Sunday. Airport authorities, local leaders, and others gathered to offer a silent prayer and observe two minutes of silence in honor of those who died when the ill-fated Boeing overshot the runway and plunged into Kenjar Valley, killing 158 people.

The prayers were said at exactly 6:20 a.m. on May 22, Sunday, the time at which the plane plunged into the ravine.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Deputy Speaker Yogish Bhat, Additional DC Prabhkar Sharma, Airport Director M. R. Vasudeva, AI CEO S. Chandrakumar, AI Station Manager Chellam Prasad, and others offered bouquets and lit candles on the pedestal raised at the site. The victims’ family members and friends, who were also present, placed wreaths on the pedestal and paid their respects to their loved ones.

Speaking on the occasion, Chandrakumar said that the AI will hold simultaneous prayer meetings at all 96 centres across the country. He also said that the local Gram Panchayat had proposed the contruction of a memorial building comprising a community hall and a reading room at Maravoor. AI would bear 90 percent of the costs of constructing this memorial and the GP would pay the rest, he added.
