Posthumous Kirti Chakra for Wing Commander Darryl Castelino

darryl14jan26 1Mangalore, Jan 26, 2014: Wing Commander Darryl Castelino who hailed from Kinnigoli near Mangalore and  had met a tragic end in a helicopter crash during the rescue mission of Uttarakhand deluge affected people  in June last year,  has been posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, the second highest military honour, on Republic Day.



Wing Commander Darryl Castelino, was serving  in the Kolkata Base of the IAF and was active in the relief mission when the tragedy struck. He was the son of Harold Castelino and Leena.


The family had moved to Mumbai years ago. The 38 year old Darryl is survived by his wife, a son and daughter.
