Mangalore, Nov 21, 2012: Although the High Court of Karnataka had stayed the first information report (FIR) filed against Kasturi TV channel reporter Naveen Soorinje in connection with the Mangalore home stay attack of July 28, the police did not stop treating him like a criminal.

The police produced him in the junior magistrate first class (JMFC) court III on Tuesday regarding his application to be released following the High Court order. He was brought to the police van with handcuffs on; however, when reporters began clicking their cameras, the handcuffs were hastily removed before the van reached the court.
Senior advocates expressed their opinion that handcuffing Soorinje is unnecessary because he was not like those always trying to escape. The police ought to have noted these differences, they added.
When the High Court order was submitted to the local court, it was nearly 5:45 p.m., but by then, the JMFC Court had wound up for the day.
Sathish Bantwal, Soorinje’s lawyer, said that all procedures related to his release have been completed, and the judge is expected to rule on Nov 21, Wednesday.
