Pathumudi Sooryanarayana Rao, founder of Janatha Deluxe hotel passes away

Mangaluru, October 10, 2025: P. Sooryanarayana Rao, founder of Janatha Deluxe chain of hotels in the city, passed away at a private hospital due to age-related illness, here on Friday. He was 72.

Rao is survived by wife Bharathi and daughter Srilaxmi. Born to a landlord’s family on March 27, 1953 at Manchi village in Bantwal taluk, Rao ventured into hospitality sector by opening Janatha Veg Restaurant at the Sharon Hotel in Kundapura initially.

Later, Rao opened a similar vegetarian restaurant at the Kediyoor Hotels in Udupi, followed by one more on Karnad Sadashiva Rao Road in Mangaluru. In 1990, he operated from an own premises, Pathumudi Soudha, at Ballalbagh in the city.

Pathumudi Soudha, with a restaurant, wedding hall, and other facilities, has been popular among people. Janatha Deluxe has been a popular name in the catering sector too that provides food to a variety of events, from smaller ones to larger ones.
