New traffic signal system gets trial run

Mangaluru, Feb 03, 2015: The traffic police has put into use a new traffic signalling system at Horticulture Junction (near St. Theresa School) on an experimental basis from Monday.

It was among four new traffic signalling systems installed in the city by the police department at an estimated cost of Rs. 44 lakh.

Trial runs

Udaya S. Nayak, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said that other systems had been installed at Bendorwell Junction, Balmatta Junction and KSRTC Junction (near Big Bazaar) at Bejai.

The traffic signal system at Bejai was put on trial for some hours on Friday last.

He said the other systems would be put into use on an experimental basis after three or four days.

It required at least three to four policemen to manage the system when first implemented. The systems operate both through solar energy and grid power.

There was long queue of vehicles at Horticulture Junction on the first day of operation on Monday.

Vehicle pile-up

Mr. Nayak said this was due to the closure of Bunts Hostel Circle and Ambedkar Circle road for concreting. As many vehicles were plying on Ambedkar Circle-Balmatta Junction-Horticulture Junction- Mallikatta Road, the traffic density was higher.

The queue of vehicles is expected to come down once the road between Bunts Hostel Circle and Ambedkar Circle opens up.

He said that it would take some days to synchronise the timings on the traffic signal systems by assessing the traffic flow at each junction after operating the signals.
