New Parliament building inauguration: Centre to launch Rs 75 coin to mark special occasion

New Delhi, May 26, 2023: On Thursday, the Ministry of Finance announced its plans to introduce a commemorative Rs 75 coin to celebrate the inauguration of the new Parliament building. The ministry specified that the coin would feature the inscription "Parliament Complex" and depict an image of the newly constructed building.

 

According to the ministry’s notification, the Rs 75 coin will be circular and have a diameter of 44 millimeters. Additionally, it will bear 200 serrations along the edges. The composition of the coin will be a quaternary alloy comprising 50 percent silver, 40 percent copper, 5 percent nickel, and 5 percent zinc.

The year "2023" will be inscribed in international numerals below the image of the Parliament Complex on the coin.

Meanwhile, the inauguration ceremony on Sunday, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is expected to be attended by 25 political parties. However, 20 opposition parties have chosen to boycott the event.

Among the attending parties, in addition to the 18 members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) including the BJP, seven non-NDA parties will participate. These parties, namely the BSP, Shiromani Akali Dal, Janata Dal (Secular), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), YSR Congress, BJD, and TDP, have publicly expressed their intent to attend the ceremony.

The presence of these seven parties, representing a total of 50 MPs in the Lok Sabha, is considered significant for the BJP-led NDA. Their participation will help counter the opposition’s claim that the event is solely a government affair.

The 18 NDA members, apart from the BJP, consist of Shiv Sena, National People’s Party, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, Jannayak Janata Party, AIDMK, IMKMK, AJSU, RPI, Mizo National Front, Tamil Maanila Congress, ITFT (Tripura), Bodo People’s Party, Pattali Makkal Kacchi, MGP, Apna Dal, and AGP, as confirmed by alliance leaders.

Nineteen parties, including the Congress, Left, TMC, SP, and AAP, have jointly announced their decision to boycott the event, expressing their dissatisfaction with the new building. They argue that the "soul of democracy has been sucked out" and have also protested against the Prime Minister inaugurating the building, viewing it as an insult to the esteemed constitutional office of the President of India.
