Mangalore, Mar 23, 2013: Kasturi channel reporter Naveen Soorinje who was behind bars since four months after being arrested in the Morning Mist Homestay attack case, finally walks free. He was released from the prison on March 23, Saturday at 5.30 pm. The journalist was released in the wake of the High Court granting him bail on March 18.
Several media persons, members of DYFI, PUCL, Komu Sauharda Vedike welcomed Soorinje on his release. Even Vittal Malekudiya, who was arrested on charges of Naxal links and subsequently released and Vijaykumar, one of the victims of the homestay attack, were present.
Muneer Katipalla, District President of DYFI, who spoke to media men said his organization was extremely pleased over the release of Soorinje and added DYFI would continue its fight against moral policing.
Satish Kumar Bantwal, Soorinje’s advocate said his client was released on a surety bond of Rs 5 lakhs and that his brother-in-law Jagannath Shetty gave the surety bond. Soorinje will have to appear before court whenever asked to do so, Satish Kumar said.
It may be recalled here that Soorinje was arrested on November 7 last year as the 44th accused in the case and was earlier denied bail by the sessions court and the High Court.
