Mangalore, January 25: In his inaugural speech on the occasion of the National Safety Week jointly organized by the district administration, police department, and the Road Transport Officer (RTO) at Carmel High School on the morning of Jan 25, Tuesday, Prof. Dr. B. M. Hegde, the former vice chancellor of MAHE, expressed his concerns over the rising number of deaths by accidents in this district and said that only accidental death can be prevented by taking a few simple precautions.
He said that, although death is unavoidable and that we are all born to die, road accidents can easily be avoided by following a few simple traffic rules and taking a few precautions. Urging the youth to stick to the law and follow traffic rules religiously, he said that road deaths can be prevented only if people follow traffic laws. He also suggested that civic studies should be introduced for all students to train them to become law-abiding citizens. He concluded his speech by urging the traffic police to take strict action and impose heavy fines on those caught violating traffic laws.
Speaking on the occasion, SP Dr. A. Subrahmanyeshwar Rao said that enforcement of traffic laws will be quite ineffective if citizens lack the culture and character to follow them. He also informed the audience that he has requested a detailed report of a study conducted on accident-prone spots along NH48 under the limits of the DK district since this stretch of road has seen 98 deaths during the previous year alone. He said that steps will be taken after making a thorough analysis of this report.
Seemanth Kumar Singh, the police commissioner, presided over the event. City Bus Owners’ Association Secretary Azeez Parthipady, DCP Muthuraya, and RTO Seva Nayak also participated in this programme.
