NICO Orientation: Truth must be the core criterion for media personnel, says Dr. Harsha Halahalli

Mangaluru, Aug 5, 2026: Truth must remain the guiding principle for media professionals, despite the rapid evolution of technology and communication platforms, said Dr. Harsha Halahalli, Registrar of Nitte (Deemed to be University), during the orientation programme for newly admitted students of the Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO) on Monday.

Delivering the presidential address, Dr. Halahalli said the credibility of information, communication strategies and creativity depends on a strong commitment to truth. He noted that while artificial intelligence has become an integral part of modern media and social media enables information to be shared within seconds, journalists and media professionals must continue to uphold accuracy and public trust.

He observed that in the past, people relied mainly on newspapers and a limited number of television channels for news, often receiving information long after events had occurred. Today, digital platforms provide instant updates, but maintaining credibility has emerged as one of the biggest challenges for the media.

Speaking on the occasion, N.V. Paulose, Chairman of Global TV, said media students have the responsibility of delivering authentic and credible content while using their creativity to tell compelling stories. He encouraged students to develop strong storytelling skills and explore emerging opportunities in the media industry.

Earlier, Dr. Moulya Baladi, Head of the Nitte Institute of Communication, welcomed the gathering. The orientation programme also included briefing sessions on hostel and student affairs, sports facilities, student counselling and well-being, the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) policy, and examination procedures, conducted by faculty members and officials of NICO and Nitte University.
