Udupi, May 17, 2026: In a rare display of communal harmony, two Muslim women approached Karnataka Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi R Hebbalkar in Udupi on Saturday seeking justice for a poor Hindu widow who has been unable to secure possession of government-allotted land for nearly 35 years.
The beneficiary, Girija Shettigar, an elderly widow from 80 Badagabettu village in Udupi taluk, has been living in a rented house since her husband’s death. She was allotted five cents of land under a government housing scheme in 1989 and was issued a title deed.

However, forest department officials allegedly denied her possession of the land, claiming it falls within a reserved forest area. Unable to afford legal action, Girija continued working as a daily wager while paying rent.
According to reports, the family of her neighbour Salahuddin had been supporting her for years and helping her approach authorities to resolve the issue. The women informed the minister that well-wishers were ready to construct a house for Girija if possession of the land was granted.
Moved by their appeal, Hebbalkar said the incident reflected India’s unity and communal harmony. She assured the women that action would be initiated through the district administration.
