Mulki: Woman pedestrian killed after being hit by car on NH-66

Mangaluru, January 29, 2026: A 59-year-old woman was killed after a car hit her while she was walking along the roadside near Karnad Kokkarakal on National Highway 66 in Mulki on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Vanaja Purushotham Poojary (59), a resident of Markanja in Chitrapu. She was walking towards the milk society near Kokkarakal along with Jacintha Machado when the car struck them.

Following the collision, the car crashed into an iron safety barricade on the roadside and came to a halt. Due to the impact, Vanaja was flung away and suffered severe injuries, resulting in her death on the spot. Jacintha Machado sustained injuries but survived, narrowly escaping death.

Vanaja is survived by her husband and son.

Mangaluru North Traffic Police Inspector Shivakumar, along with personnel from the Mulki police station and officials of the National Highways Department, visited the scene and carried out an inspection. The car driver has been taken into custody, and a case has been registered in connection with the incident.
