Moodbidri: Mother and son die of electric shock

Moodbidri, Oct 22, 2026: A mother and her son died of electrocution at Varnabettu in the limits of Paladka Gram Panchayat in Moodbidri taluk on Thursday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Mercy Mascarenhas, 45, and her son Shawn Mascarenhas, 18.

Shawn, a student of Holy Rosary College in Moodbidri, was reportedly hanging clothes to dry when the tragedy occurred.

It is suspected that a high-tension power line came into contact with the wire used for drying clothes, causing an electric current to pass through it.

According to reports, Shawn suffered an electric shock while handling the clothes and was struggling. Seeing her son in distress, his mother Mercy rushed to rescue him. However, she too suffered an electric shock, and both died on the spot.

The incident came to light between 7 am and 8 am when a worker arrived near Mercy’s house for plantation work and noticed the tragedy.

Moodbidri police visited the spot, conducted an inspection and registered a case.
