Monsoon intensifies in Dakshina Kannada: Red alert issued; schools, colleges closed on July 8

Mangaluru, July 8, 2026: In view of the Red Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting extremely heavy rainfall, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has declared a holiday for all anganwadi centres, government, aided and private primary and high schools, residential schools, and pre-university (PU) colleges across the district on Wednesday, July 8.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. announced the decision in an official statement.


Monsoon intensifies in Dakshina Kannada

The district administration warned that any educational institution violating the closure order would face legal action under Section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

With the IMD and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre issuing a Red Alert for the district, the Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority has put emergency precautionary measures in place.

To ensure public safety, the district administration has issued the following guidelines:

Parents are advised to ensure that children do not visit low-lying areas, waterlogged locations, lakes, riverbanks, or seashores.
Fishermen have been strictly instructed not to venture into the sea.
Tourists and the general public are prohibited from visiting riverbanks and beaches until further notice.
All district- and taluk-level officials have been directed to remain at their headquarters, stay prepared for disaster management duties, respond promptly to public grievances, and maintain constant contact with the Deputy Commissioner’s control room.
Authorities have been instructed to establish and keep relief centres ready in every taluk to handle any emergency situation.
