Mishap at Fish meal factory- death toll reaches 5; Company officials arrested

Mangaluru, April 18, 2022: The death count in the mishap at fish meal unit, Shree Ulka LLP at Mangaluru SEZ has risen to five.

The Police took 4 Company officials into custody.

The mishap occurred when the labourers had entered the huge tank which was used to clean the fish brought to the factory from various places.

As many as eight  labourers had as usual stepped into the 20 feet deep tank. After  their work, they could not come out and died of suffocation, it has been gathered.

Three workers died on Sunday, whereas the two other who were seriously ill and admitted to the hospital, passed away on Monday morning.

The deceased are Sameerul Islam, Umarul Farooq, Nizamuddin Saab, Mirajul Islam and Sharafat Ali. Whereas, Hasan Ali, Mohammed Karibulla and Hafizulla are receiving medical treatment at AJ hospital.

 

The labourers are learnt to be from West Bengal. According to the police, no safety equipment was supplied to the labourers at the unit. The police have booked cases under IPC Sections 337, 338, 304, and 34.

Production manager Rubi Joseph, area manager Kuber Gade, supervisor Mohammed Anwar and the firm’s labour-in-charge Farooq from Azad Nagara Ullal have been taken into custody and are being questioned.

The factory has been closed and senior officials have visited the spot.

The investigation is in progress.
