Mangalore, June 24, 2012: Gulzar Banu, mayor of Mangalore, has issued a notice to the commissioner of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), in which she has instructed MCC officers to inform her before conducting any raids on commercial establishments across the city.
Recently, the MCC had raided several slaughter houses in Kudroli and seized live sheep, which the mayor later released in exchange for a small fine of Rs. 2000.
The MCC continued raiding many more illegal slaughter houses in Bunder and seized some more sheep, but this time, they did not give the mayor a chance to fine the owners of the abattoirs, but auctioned them off.
The mayor has, therefore, instructed the officers to inform her in advance about any such developments.
In response to the mayor’s notice, an MCC officer said that the law does not make it mandatory for them to inform the mayor before conducting any raids. The MCC officers have the right to raid any illegal commercial establishment without informing elected representatives, he added.
