Udupi, July 29, 2013 :  It has been a month since the  gang rape of a medical student of Manipal University took place. The police who have arrested all the accused in the case, are now awaiting the DNA report to file the charge sheet in the court.

Manipal Rape 1

Udupi SP Dr MB Boralingaiah says  the department cannot say for sure as to when the DNA report may be available as the DNA test centre was usually   flooded with cases, some  as old as one year.

Still, there is hope that the report may be available in one month.

The police department feels the investigation into the case would cross one stage if the charge sheet is filed along with the DNA report.  There is also scope to file the  charge sheet without a DNA report. As per rules, the charge sheet should be filed within three months of  the arrest.

If the incident had taken place on June 20,  three of the accused were arrested a week later, on June 27. The main accused Yogish was arrested soon after he attempted suicide by consuming poison, while  another accused Anand too was caught just when he tried to end his life by hanging himself. Yet another main accused  Hariprasad was also subsequently arrested.

Even the brothers of Yogish and Hariprasad have been arrested on the charges of destroying evidences. Presently, the prime accused are in Shimoga jail, while the brothers of the two accused are in Hiriadka jail.

The judicial custody period of all the accused will end on July 29 when they will once again be produced before the court.

Meanwhile, the gang rape victim student who had returned to her native place after being discharged  from hospital, has not yet returned to Manipal.
