Mangaluru, Jan 24, 2026: Mangaluru has emerged as the safest city in India in the Numbeo Safety Index 2026, securing 46th place globally with a safety score of 74.4 among 304 cities surveyed worldwide. China’s Qingdao topped the global rankings with a safety score of 89.2, according to the survey-based index released in January 2026.
The Numbeo Safety Index is compiled by the crowd-sourced global database Numbeo and is based on public perceptions of safety and crime. Respondents assess factors such as their sense of safety while walking alone at night, the prevalence of violent and property crimes, and overall personal security. These responses are analysed and converted into a score ranging from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating greater perceived safety.
Within India, Ahmedabad in Gujarat ranked second with a safety score of 68.5 (87th globally), followed by Jaipur in Rajasthan (65.3), Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu (62.0) and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala (61.0).
The 2026 index also highlights notable regional trends, with several Middle Eastern cities, including Abu Dhabi, Doha and Sharjah, featuring among the world’s safest. Overall, India ranked 70th globally with a national safety score of 55.8.
The rankings, which reflect public perception rather than official crime data, are widely used for urban comparisons, travel planning and assessing city livability.
