"I thank the local residents, police personnel, and officials who carried out rescue operations immediately after the incident during the night," he said.

"I have discussed the matter with the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. This incident is a wake-up call for all of us," Khader said.

He noted that although the monsoon has just begun, such a major tragedy has already occurred. "Mangaluru has many hilly and low-lying areas. Officials will inspect vulnerable locations and issue warnings wherever necessary. However, people must also remain vigilant and take precautions on their own," he added.

Khader said the government would address hazardous conditions on government land, but its powers are limited in cases involving private property.

"If a compound wall on private property collapses, there is little the government can do directly. The property owner is responsible for repairing the house or structure. Therefore, we cannot provide direct compensation for damage to private homes. Compensation will be given to the house owner, who must undertake the necessary repairs," he explained.

Describing the Mangaluru incident as a warning for the entire coastal region, the minister urged people to stay alert during the monsoon.

"If you notice a dangerous situation, keep away from the area and immediately inform the authorities. No matter how well prepared we are, it is impossible to completely prevent the impact of natural disasters. We pray that such incidents do not occur," he said.

Khader also said he would visit the site at Thokkottu where a retaining wall had collapsed.

He further stated that if a privately constructed building causes harm or inconvenience to the public, the responsibility lies with the owner. The minister added that he had discussed the issue with the Revenue Minister earlier in the morning.
