Mangaluru gears up for Deepavali: Markets glow with lanterns, candles, and crackers

Mangaluru, Oct 17, 2025: As the festival of lights Deepavali draws near, both traditional and modern markets are gearing up for the celebrations. Shops have already started to attract crowds, with customers inquiring about festive items. Meanwhile, firecracker sellers have begun business discussions as soon as the municipal licenses were issued.

Glow of the Lanterns

Lanterns (Goodu Deepas) remain one of the main attractions during Deepavali. This year, various new designs have already arrived in the market, offering something different from previous years. Along with locally made ones, lanterns from Mumbai, Gujarat, and other regions are also being sold.

Lanterns made from paper as well as plastic are in high demand. While large lanterns continue to be popular, small decorative string lanterns have also been introduced this year, adding variety to the market.

Despite the recent rains in the city, preparations for Deepavali are in full swing, with shopping activity picking up as the festival approaches.

Demand for Firecrackers

Alongside lanterns, the demand for firecrackers is also rising. Different types and sizes of crackers have arrived in the city markets. Though large-scale purchases are yet to begin, interest is increasing. Clay-based firecrackers are more affordable, while single-shot ones are relatively expensive.

Candles and Decorative Lights

Shops and malls are filled with colorful candles and electric light garlands that are drawing customer attention. Candles come in unique shapes and carved designs, adding a touch of elegance. For home decorations, mini and large-sized electric bulb chains are available in many varieties — making them one of the highlights of this festive season.
