Mangaluru: Woman dies following clothes catch fire during Pooja

Mangaluru, June 7, 2025: In a tragic incident, a 64-year-old woman succumbed to burn injuries at a private hospital in the city after her clothes caught fire during a pooja ritual at home on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Sarojini (64), a resident of Gurunagara near Mary Hill. During the incident, her son Akshay (20) sustained burn injuries while trying to save her.

According to reports, Sarojini’s clothes accidentally caught fire while she was performing a pooja at home. Seeing this, her son rushed to her aid but was also injured in the process. Neighbours who learned about the incident immediately shifted her to a hospital, but she did not survive despite receiving treatment.

Police said Sarojini had reportedly been suffering from mental health issues following the death of her husband, who was a postmaster.

A case has been registered at the Kankanady Town Police Station.
