Mangaluru, September 5, 2024: The Principal District and Sessions Court in Mangaluru has sentenced a 23 year old man from Vijayapura district to life imprisonment for murdering a young woman for the sole reason that she had turned down his love and was planning to marry someone else.
The convict is Sandeep Rathod. The court has also slapped a penalty of Rs 25000 on him. The murder took place on June 6, 2019.
Both Sandeep and the deceased woman Anjana Vashishta had come into contact through Facebook in 2018. Later they became friends and decided to get married after securing job.
On June 1, 2019 Rathod had come to Mangaluru to appear for a written examination for SI post. He had secured a room on rent in Attavara and stayed there with Anjana. They had told the landlord that Rathod was a police constable and they were married couple.
Meanwhile, Anjana who had gone hometown decided to marry the boy whom her parents had chosen for her. She informed this to Rathod and had asked him to forget her. Angered by this, Rathod had strangulated Anjana with a TV cable on June 7, 2019 and had escaped with her ATM card and mobile phone. He had drawn Rs 15000 using her ATM and had stayed at a lodge at Sindagi in Vijayapura.
The police who initiated investigation had succeeded in arresting the accused.
There were a total of 45 witnesses in this case.
